Brighton

Brighton’s attractions:

  • Royal Pavillion
  • The pier
  • The beach
  • Sea life centre
  • The Lanes (antique shops)

Brighton is one of the most popular seaside towns in England. It is one of the closest to London with very good train links into Victoria Station. Students will be able to enjoy the beach with all the usual attractions of a seaside town, as well as a Sea Life Centre and very attractive shopping area called “The Lanes”. There is one landmark that stands out in the city and that is the Royal Pavilion, the royal palace built for King George IV when he was Prince of Wales. The design has influences of Indian architecture, which gives it an unusual oriental appearance.

Rochester

Rochester’s attractions:

  • Castle
  • Cathedral
  • Dickens Christmas Festival or Sweeps Festival

The city of Rochester has strong connections with the writer, Charles Dickens, and at Christmas there is a Dickensian Christmas festival with people dressed as characters from his novels walking around the city and acting out scenes of life. In the evening there will be a candle-lit procession down the High Street in Rochester. During the first May bank holiday weekend the Sweeps festival is a show of traditional Morris dancing, which remembers the annual holiday for the people who cleaned chimneys.
